In this module, we’re going to explore something deeply emotional that nearly everyone in recovery faces: the unpredictable nature of healing. When you’re in the thick of chronic illness, one of the hardest parts is the mental torment of not knowing whether what you’re doing is working — or even helping at all.

You start to wonder:

  • “Why do I feel better one week and worse the next?”
  • “Am I doing something wrong?”
  • “Is all this effort even worth it?”

Let me reassure you from personal experience: this confusion is normal. I went through years of second-guessing, wondering whether my efforts were in vain. But eventually, I did get well. And a huge part of that journey involved learning to trust the process — even when it didn’t seem to be working.

Healing is Never a Straight Line

The reality is that healing is not linear. You can be:

  • Eating clean
  • Sleeping well
  • Off technology
  • Practicing everything “right”…

…and still feel worse one week than the week before.

That doesn’t mean it’s not working.

It just means your body is navigating its own unique process of repair. Healing involves cycles, layers, and emotional detoxes. Some days, your body will need to purge old trauma, inflammation, or toxicity — and that might feel like a step back. But it’s part of the forward movement.

The Danger of Misinterpreting Setbacks

This is where people often get derailed:

  • They feel better, so they push too hard, burn out, and crash.
  • They feel worse, so they give up and return to old, unhelpful coping habits.

I’ve done both. Many times.

But what changed for me was the realisation that:

Healthy routines are never bad for you, even when they don’t give you immediate relief.

So I stayed consistent. I kept my tech curfews. I ate clean. I respected my body’s need for rest — even when it frustrated me. And slowly, things improved.

Zoom Out: Long-Term Trends Matter

When you’re deep in the fog, it’s easy to obsess over how you feel today.

But ask yourself:

  • Are you more capable than you were 3 months ago?
  • Do basic tasks feel less overwhelming?
  • Has your baseline shifted, even slightly?

If the answer is yes, then you are healing — even if it doesn’t feel dramatic.

Healing isn’t a constant incline. It’s a jagged climb. But six months from now, you’ll look back and notice: I’m not in the same place I was.

Don’t Let Discouragement Derail You

One of the cruelest traps of chronic illness is this:

You finally summon the strength to try… and you don’t get the results you hoped for.

It’s disheartening. But don’t quit.

What kept me going was this mindset:

“Even if it doesn’t feel like it’s working today, I’m building something important for the future.”

Discipline + Compassion = Progress

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about showing up with:

  • Discipline to do the right thing
  • Compassion for yourself when things don’t go smoothly

You might slip up. You might regress. That’s okay.

Pick yourself back up and carry on.

Your body is not broken. It just needs consistency, patience, and a safe space to heal — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Closing Message

I look back at my younger self — the one who stayed the course, who didn’t give up — and I feel immense gratitude. He gave me the life I have now: health, energy, a family, and purpose.

So please:

  • Stay the course.
  • Ride the waves.
  • Trust that the small, consistent efforts you’re making will compound.

The version of you that’s doing this work now is a hero. Your future self will thank you for everything you’re doing today — especially the parts no one sees.

Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next module.
