What I Learned the Hard Way About Body Image in Recovery

💬 Core Message:

During chronic illness or deep burnout recovery, your body may change in ways you don’t like—weight gain, muscle loss, puffiness, weakness. These changes can trigger shame, fear, and obsession. But if you let those worries run your mind, you’ll sabotage your healing.

“You’re not failing. You’re not lazy.
You’re on fire—stop the fire first. The mirror can wait.”

Common Thoughts That Derail Healing:

  • “I’m getting so fat. I need to do something now.”

  • “My muscles are vanishing. I look weak and pathetic.”

  • “How will I ever feel attractive or respected again?”

  • “People my age are crushing it physically… and I can barely stand.”

These thoughts feel urgent—but they are not the priority right now. Healing your internal systems is.

Personal Truth

When I was in the thick of recovery, I couldn’t even do a push-up. I shook doing wall presses. I hated my body. I compared myself to fitness influencers and felt worthless.
But over time—when I focused on true healing—I got stronger than ever. I did weighted knuckle pull-ups. I lost six stone. But none of that came from obsession. It came from surrender.

The Trap of Mirror-Based Self-Esteem

  • If your worth is tied to your reflection, recovery becomes torture.

  • I grew up in a home with mirrors everywhere—each one became a weapon.

🔁 Break the pattern.
If you need to cover mirrors, do it. If you need to stop following certain influencers, unfollow. Protect your peace.

Why “Fixing” Your Appearance First Backfires

  • Your body is using all available energy to survive.

  • Obsessive exercising or restriction during healing = more stress = delayed recovery

  • Trying to “fix” your weight or shape is like painting a house while it’s on fire.

🛠 Reframe Your Focus:

Instead of… Shift to…
“I need to lose weight now” “I need to nourish and rest”
“I look horrible” “My body is fighting for me”
“I’m falling behind” “Healing is my highest timeline”
“Everyone else looks better” “They didn’t live my story”

🧘 Mindset Shift Exercise:

Say aloud or journal:

“This body is temporary. This phase is temporary.
My body has kept me alive—I will not shame it while it’s trying to heal.
I will be kind. I will rest. And when I’m ready, I’ll rise stronger than before.”

🪞 Suggested Action:

  • Take a break from mirrors.

  • Create an “inner praise” list: 3 non-appearance traits you value in yourself.

  • Replace body-checking with breath-checking: “How am I feeling?” instead of “How am I looking?”

💡 Remember:

You are not behind. You are not broken. You are rebuilding.

When your health returns—when your sleep is deep, your digestion is strong, your joy comes back—your body will follow.

And you won’t have to fight it.
